An absolutely fascinating article. SF needs to be careful as they may find Childs elevated in the eyes of some to Mitnick or even the illustrious Robin Hood.

Network Magic is a beautiful application - though unfortunately aimed at consumers and very small businesses. Still, here's hoping Cisco can learn a bit from Pure Networks. Their software while much improved is still a bit obtuse.

I agree, and this isn't the first outage Amazon has suffered either. But with out-sourcing I don't think I'd ever rely fully on a single hosted solution. Using multiple serves as a failsafe mechanism for the inevitable day when a companies' servers do fail.

I agree...more than one case has been botched by individuals in labs failing to correctly operate there equipment or tests.

Shouldn't Amazon already have multiple fail-safe devices? I think in this day having any outage of internet services for a large company is highly embarrassing.

I think this is probably a good thing. You don't want some fool dinking around with the system and messing it up so that the case can't be prosecuted.

Very attractive offer from Chitika, especially as Rowse has seen them offer a good return.

I've used virtualization on a number of occasions. A lot depends on the hardware you are using. I find that you do lose performance - unless you are using one of these hypervisor solutions that are essentially a mini-os. But if you use a traditional virtualization solution (e.g. VMWare Server/Workstation) you'll see significant overhead. That said, the speed loss is reasonable for the benefit of putting two to four machines on a single 2U server. I love Dell PowerEdge 2950's!

Yeah...I think the news is driving a lot of hype. And people are following the news and saying, "It's horrible" and then the news says, "Everyone says its horrible." It is a self-perpetuating cycle.

This is why we need something similar to Cleversafe that can utilize multiple storage grids such as Nirvanix and Amazon. Its also why SmugMug is smart for using local caching rather than depending solely upon a cloud based solution.

The way we receive video content is about to change. I already watch almost everything via streaming video - whether from Netflix, Hulu, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, etc. - its all piped over the internet. Expect to see this become a hot market. It will raise additional technical challenges with its massive storage and bandwidth requirements.

Performance really is my biggest concern with virtual servers. How do you know how your office will perform until you actually do it? What concerns do you guys have?

I also have much disdain for software patents.

What I thought is interesting is that while people are ranting about Vista, it is selling very well and who can argue with that? The image is that it's doing horrible, but it really isn't.

Yes, really interesting! I really liked this line - "Some commercial companies maintain open source packages and I wish they were doing a better job on this than non-commercial projects."

Do open source applications take security seriously?
Interesting since most common wisdom has suggested that open source applications are better for security than proprietary applications for two reasons: (a) the code is open to constant examination allowing individuals to find and correct errors quickly (though this also allows for exploitation) and (b) the code can be patched by anyone - allowing more rapid response to outstanding issues.

This is awesome, State of the art GPS tracking his speed and whereabouts by his parents. Too bad every ticket I've gotten I was guilty of.

I'll reiterate my disdain for patents. I think they hobble industry. Their length needs to be shortened in general and in software they need to be largely removed.

I saw a story about this on the front of a copy of Fast Company or INC. I get...But I haven't had a chance to read the article yet. Microsoft needs a campaign to rescue Vista from the overwhelmingly negative opinions people have of it.
