I have to disagree. I think kids adapt easier to applications then adults, so if a kid starts out using OpenOffice, they can always learn (if they are forced to), Microsoft Office. I also believe that if a company deployed OpenOffice, they would have difficulties at first, but over the on long run, they would be far far better off, because they would not have to keep incurring the cost of the latest and greatest copy of Microsoft Office that is forced on them. Another benefit to applications like Open Office and Firefox is that they work the same on Mac, Windows, and Linux. I use all 3 platforms, and I can move effortlessly from one platform to another. The only time I have difficulties is when an application does work on a particular platform, so I have to find an alternative that does.

Cool! I happen to love Google applications.

No Firefox for the iPhone/iPod touch … D’oh!
That is funny. StreetView is fun.

Are Google's StreetView drivers humans or robots?
Yeah...But I object more on principle than on actual need. I'm very happy with Safari on the iPhone...Perhaps as I use the iPhone more I will see that I need Firefox, but at this juncture...

I dunno. I can get on Facebook on a Blackberry and it'll show me latest updates. Which I don't because I'm not interested. :)

Forget Push Email, Here Comes Push Facebook For Your Mobile
This is a great idea...Though another productivity kicker. In a boring office meeting? Now people will be reading what their friends are doing at work while yawning.

A fascinating idea...Don't try and combat the hackers, hand the troublesome traffic off to a massive enterprise like Google. Of course, some of us remember the last time this was done by Israeli firm Blue Frog (an anti-spam application I yearn for daily)...They took down significant websites including Six Apart as the hack attack shifted focus.

Georgia turns to Google’s Blogger amid Russia onslaught
I see no reason that the Russian government needs to be involved in these attacks in any way...or even criminal elements necessarily. If we were to wage war against a technological nation and this war was popular amongst the American populace I have no doubt script kiddies and hackers across the nation would pop out of the woodwork to lend a hand in warfare that requires no danger of physical death (okay, maybe a small bit).

I agree that Linux is a viable alternative in many scenarios, but we can't simply gloss over the differences. While a primary or middle schooler may not notice the difference, high school students will. There is no Microsoft Office for Linux and while OpenOffice is similar the differences are pronounced enough. Linux boxes make great replacements where the primary purpose is web browsing, educational applications, and the like...but don't expect kids not to notice when they boot up OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. I'm not suggesting that moving to Linux - even for applications like OpenOffice is a bad thing, in fact I use OpenOffice...But we cannot simply install these systems and expect the transition to be transparent. There will be training requirements for both faculty and students.

I love this idea...though it is somewhat competitive with IN. I think it has a great future and we are working on some similar features for IN. However, we don't want to become a full-featured RSS reader b/c then we enter competition with Google Reader, et al. Rather we'll be looking for ways to offer some of the benefits without the whole package and integrating with third party services as well.

I have to agree with Lardinois on this one - suing StudiVZ will not win Facebook any friends in Germany. If they had nailed the company when it was small - sure, but you let it last as long as it has and its almost like saying, "Sure, go ahead, we don't care."

Blinkx makes offer to bail out ad company Miva
yeah, a lot of the problem is just that people are ingrained with OpenOffice...its hard to convince them to switch...and compatibility isn't perfect. if you are writing school papers it usually works fine - but excel spreadsheet calculations - well its a bit of a gamble.
